Temporary authorisation to supervise a thesis without HDR

The Université Grenoble Alpes has set up a procedure for granting approval to supervise a thesis without an HDR. This exceptional authorisation may be granted on request by the Doctoral College of the Université Grenoble-Alpes to a person who has already officially co-supervised at least one defended thesis. As a reminder, thesis co-supervision is permitted for non-HDRs, unlike thesis direction or co-direction, which are not authorised. Approval is granted only once in a researcher's career and for a single thesis. The approved thesis director also undertakes to defend his or her HDR before the thesis is defended.

The application for temporary authorisation must include :
  • the student's PhD application file ;
  • a detailed CV of the prospective thesis supervisor (included in the HDR application file) ;
  • the signed application form.
As with the application to obtain the HDR, the request for temporary authorisation is examined by the Doctoral School's HDR Committee. This committee meets every 3 or 4 months, so it is important to plan ahead when applying for temporary authorisation.
